The Oil Paintings and Sculpture Department is one of the longest established departments at China Guardian and staged its first auction in the spring of 1994, adding sculpture to the portfolio in the spring of 1995.
The department handles art pieces by modern and contemporary artists, as well as early masters. At the first auction in the spring of 1994, a record for Chinese oil painting was set by Chen Yifei's ¡°Shandi Feng¡±, which sold for 2.86 million RMB. Liu Chunhua's ¡°Chairman Mao Going to Anyuan¡±, which sold for 6.05 million RMB, set the world record for Chinese oil paintings at that time.
The market for oil paintings has been growing steadily since the mid 1990s and has seen rapid growth since 2003. This significant growth is due at least partly to an expanding customer base that includes young Chinese entrepreneurs, and underlines the increasing importance of oil paintings as a collection category. In 2005, we saw another major leap, with over 200 million RMB total sales, and it is evident that there are no signs of slowing any time soon. |
